The City of 1000 temples, its history dates back
to the 3rd Century B.C. of the seven hundred temples
that once stood along the banks of the sacred
lake City, five hundred still remain. But what
does survive, stuns the senses.
Puri: One of the four most holy places of pilgrimage
for the pious Hindu. It is known for the Temples
of Jagannath, Lord of the Universe built in the
12th century. Puri also offers a fine beach south
west of which lies the Chilka Lake noted for its
game birds, fishing and boating facilities.
Konark: Here stands the impressive remains of
the Sun Temple popularly known as the "Black Pagoda"
because of the tint, the structure has acquired
over centuries of exposure. Built by King Narasimha
in honor of the Sun God as a protection against
the Muslim invasion. |
